Our infrastructure services team delivers projects that maintain and enhance the built environment. Part of that is our work to operate, maintain and improve large parts of the UK road network. Whether you’re involved in frontline operational work, design, project management or office-based services, every day you’ll be helping to improve the lives of millions of people.

Skanska are currently looking for HGV Class 2 drivers to work on the Highways Maintenance contract in Cambridgeshire for the winter season from November 2019 until April 2020 as Winter Maintenance drivers. The drivers will be appointed on a temporary contract to cover this period.

The role:

In this job you will be driving a gritting vehicle, known as Winter Maintenance driving. This requires you to be on call on a week on week off basis for the season. If called out, routes will be allocated to you to spread grit onto the road surface using an HGV Class 2 Gritting Vehicle. The job will be based at one of our Depots in Huntingdon, March, Whittlesford or Witchford, dependant on where you live.

Ideal candidate:

You'll have a valid Winter Maintenance qualification or experience. However if required training sessions for this City and Guilds qualification will be arranged for September/October 2019 and the above mentioned temporary contract will be extended to cover this. This role would ideally suit retired or part time LGV drivers.

You must hold a full UK driving licence with HGV Class 2 (category C) entitlement and a full CPC.

Shifts and Pay Rates:
Drivers must commit to one week on standby, then one week off. When you are on Standby you can be called out at any time to undertake a grit run. Generally the runs will be undertaken between 1800hrs and 0600hrs, but this can obviously change subject to weather conditions.
As a guide pay rates for last season 2018/19 were as follows:

  • £110per week on standby (increased to £156 21st to 28th Dec 2018 and 28th Dec to 4th January 2019)
  • £73 per grit run (Monday to Saturday)
  • £94 per grit run Sunday
  • £115 per grit run Bank Holiday
  • £135 per grit run Christmas Day and New Year’s Day

Payments for the 2019/20 season are being reviewed at present and as a guide we did approximately 50 runs in the 2018/19 season.

We thrive through embracing differences because we know that diversity opens a rich potential for new ways of thinking, helping us to build successful and winning teams. We call it Naturally Skanska.
